3 Reasons You Need to Attend a New York Liberty Game

The New York Liberty are having a stellar season right now, having just trounced the first place Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup this week, and they continue to grow their sizable win streak heading into the league’s playoffs in mid-September. The Liberty play at Barclays Center and have just a few home games left in the regular season. Often overlooked in the past, this year’s squad is a real championship contender. TV and City was invited to two recent matches in the Brooklyn arena and can’t recommend the experience enough. Here are three reasons to buy a ticket and see the Liberty in action for yourself.

1) THE TALENT

The WNBA has been around for 27 years and perhaps hasn’t ever gained the popularity that the founders had hoped for. But great ball is great ball, and the Liberty have assembled a superteam that gels incredibly well on the court. All-star Sabrina Ionescu sinks three-pointers like nobody’s business while MVP Breanna Stewart continues to break franchise records and put up monster stats. These women, along with several others on the team, are legitimate stars. Their jerseys sell, they have shoe deals with Nike and Puma, and they’re inspiring the next generation of talent. The Big Apple has been starved for a winning basketball team to rally around. Any glimmer of hope the Knicks ever seem to show is quickly crushed, and the less said about the failed Nets experiment, the better. The Liberty, meanwhile, are undeniably crushing it.

2) THE FANDOM

Something special has been happening on Atlantic Avenue this summer. The Sunday, August 6th game was sold out, bringing 11,418 fans to Barclays — the team’s largest crowd since moving to the Brooklyn venue in 2019. All season long, the Liberty fanbase has been growing, and the environment at the games is nothing short of electric. You’ll spot grown men in Statue of Liberty costumes, teenagers cheering as the starting lineup runs onto the court, and loads and loads of seafoam green, the team’s distinct and fashionable color. The dedication of these fans is a sight to behold, and when the Liberty win that Finals trophy, the numbers will only go up. Celebs are getting in on the action too; we spotted the likes of Jason Sudeikis and Druski courtside. It’s not too late to get in on the ground floor before everyone is following the Liberty in a few years. Don’t wait for the bandwagon, believe the hype.

3) THE FUN FOR ALL AGES

With sweltering temperatures in the city and kids not yet back in school, a Liberty game is an ideal family activity in air-conditioned indoors. It also makes for a great date or night out with friends. The affordability of the tickets compared to other professional sporting events or concerts is another big plus. Even those who don’t like sports will find something to enjoy. There are halftime shows, t-shirt tosses, trivia contests, free swag giveaways, and more at every game. It’s hard to not be entertained. Mascot Ellie the Elephant runs around the lower bowl taking selfies and pumping up spectators and the Timeless Torches, a dance crew with members exclusively above the age of 40, bring levity and fun to the timeouts during play. Rarely can one event satisfy so many demographics but a New York Liberty game really has something for everyone. Grab a couple of beers and burgers from one of the many stands around Barclays Center, head to your seats, and enjoy the show.
