Humble Chips

Should TV and City get into snack reviews? It’s not uncommon for our mailing address to receive PR packages from movie studios, television networks, or the occasional video game. Food, however, is decidedly less common. And yet recently, within the same weeklong span, our mailbox held two munch-related items. The first was the new Super Mario Bros. branded Oreos, but the second box was a treat from our new friends at Humble Chips.

Humble Chips bills itself as the “first organic potato chip company,” and though they are from Canada, they just launched in Whole Foods throughout the United States. The chips are made from organic ingredients, potatoes cultivated without the use of pesticides or fertilizers, ensuring that what you’re enjoying is free from harmful chemicals, making that crunch all the more satisfying. And what sets Humble Chips apart goes beyond the chips themselves. The certified compostable bags they come in contribute to reducing plastic waste and environmental impact.

Now, the most important thing to me was whether the product actually tastes good. We had four flavors for sampling, original, sea salt & cider vinegar, smokey BBQ, and creamy dill. I’ll be honest, the regular flavor, which the company’s press release beautifully describes as having “a subtle dusting of sea salt, gentle enough to let the natural organic potato flavor nudge through,” was a bit of a letdown. The chips were bland and tougher to chew than your average bag of Lay’s. Smokey BBQ too, could not compete with the snacks you already know and love.

However, when I put the lemon silkiness of the creamy dill flavor to my tongue, I was sold. It’s not a flavor pallet I’d usually enjoy, but for some reason, this concoction “hit different.” Lastly, I sampled the Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar bag, and again, was very impressed. The sweet apple tones gently complemented the dusting of salt. Strangely, the two flavors I’d normally be the least likely to indulge in ended up being my favorites.

Since I received Humble Chips , their publicity has emailed me no less than eight times to check in on their article. Shoutout to them – they’re good at their jobs. And they’ve earned a recommendation. Stay Humble and grab these off the shelves!
