American Horror Story: Delicate – Review

American Horror Story aired its most recent season finale on April 24 on FX.

By Greg Wheeler

The 12th season of the long-running anthology American Horror Story, titled Delicate, takes a different approach than the show has previously, as it is the first season that is not based on an original concept. Instead, it draws from Danielle Valentine’s novel Delicate Condition, a feminist reinterpretation of Rosemary’s Baby. Showrunner Halley Feiffer, known for her work on Impeachment: American Crime Story, brings a fresh perspective to the series as it opens with an unsettling flash-forward scene that is cleverly addressed later in the first episode.

Reality TV fans will be pleased to see Kim Kardashian join the cast in a supporting role. Her performance is a standout, with her character Siobhan emerging as a highlight of the season. The writer’s strike caused disruptions to the season’s production schedule, but the anticipation only heightens for the final four episodes when they eventually return in April.

American Horror Story: Delicate does not shy away from scares and provides viewers with an unsettling experience. Emma Roberts shines in her role as the tormented Anna, showcasing her versatility and vulnerability, traits she has displayed in previous installments of the anthology series. The supporting cast adds intrigue and complexity to the narrative, with each character’s true intentions constantly being questioned. The pace intensifies as the season reaches its mid-season finale.

The second half of the season takes on an even stranger tone, with some unusual openings to episodes that become clearer as the story progresses. One episode’s cold open takes place in England in 1555. There are nods to classic horror films like The Omen and Rosemary’s Baby, which served as significant inspirations for the season.

The 12th season of American Horror Story concludes with a shocking and satisfying finale, neatly tying up the narrative threads. The journey to the end is intense and emotionally taxing, showcasing a bold departure from previous seasons. This fresh approach keeps the series feeling new and engaging. Looking forward to what season 13 has in store!

I give American Horror Story: Delicate a B+.
