Squarena

As the temperature heats up once again, New Yorkers will be searching for indoor activities during the sweltering summer days. A newly opened experience just a minute or two’s walk from Midtown’s Bryant Park should fill that niche.

Walking into Squarena (a combo of “square” and “arena”) is reminiscent of an arcade, with neon lights everywhere. But this game is a little more active than just simple button-mashing. Participants are placed in a room with light-up square tiles on the floor and the simple objective: step on the blue tiles. It’s not that easy though, as red tiles that will take away your set number of lives come flying at you from all directions, and the time keeps ticking down on the wall in front of you. Beat one level, and you and your team will be on to the text of seemingly endless combinations of patterns.

If it sounds lame, it’s not. After visiting Squarena earlier this month, we can confirm that it’s both a blast and a great way to get a good workout in. Prepare to sweat as you jump across the floor to stomp out those last few blue boxes just in the nick of time. The creators recommended coming with a group of three, but if there are no children included, two people should work just fine.

The game lasts about 45 minutes, and there are two arena options: one “introductory” and the other “recreational,” with a third on the way that promises to be the “challenger.” We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothes you can stretch in.

The staff was also refreshingly nice, and they’re able to adjust the game on the fly if it proves to be too easy or difficult for your crew. Get to Squarena before it’s the next hot thing!
