Back 2 The Video Store, the pop-up speakeasy that opened at the Virgin Hotel in Midtown Manhattan on February 6, is a playful nod to the nostalgic era of 90s VHS rentals and Blockbuster trips. While the decor and vibe lean toward a minimal and lackluster setup — a cornered-off space of the hotel’s already existing bar with retro touches like cardboard Jurassic Park cutouts and arcade machines — the true magic here is all about the drinks.
The ordering process itself is a fun trip down memory lane: you select a VHS tape of the corresponding movie off a shelf and hand it to the bartender. This simple act immediately sets a lighthearted tone, transporting you back to a time when renting movies was an event in itself.
And then come the cocktails, which really impress. The Toy Story cocktail is a standout — a refreshing mix of cucumber tequila and watermelon puree, topped off with a kitschy green army man figure. Not to be outdone, the Jaws option dazzles with an ocean blue hue and a gummy shark, plus by a dramatic dash of red “blood” that slowly overtakes the glass as you sip. Perhaps the most playful is the “NBA Jam” shot, served on a flick-to-play hoop toy and paired with a few Milk Duds to shoot into the RumChata.
While the space may not deliver an elaborate immersive experience like promised, its unassuming setup puts the spotlight squarely on the cocktail craftsmanship. For those who appreciate creativity and well-executed themed mixology, the drinks here are well worth the visit.
Running until March 8, Back 2 The Video Store proves that sometimes a simple idea executed with passion and a twist of innovation, can make for an unforgettable night out. If you’re in Midtown and looking for a unique cocktail experience with a retro flair, this is definitely worth a visit.
