Bar of the Week: Gebhard’s Beer Culture

Welcome to Bar of the Week, a running series from TV and City that highlights New York’s best spots for drinks, vibes, and just the right amount of chaos.

Each week, we spotlight one bar. Sometimes it’s a cozy cocktail lounge. Sometimes it’s a sprawling beer hall. Sometimes it’s a barely-marked door behind a fake hardware store. We don’t try to cover every bar in the city. Just the ones we actually go to. The ones we’d take a friend, a first date, or someone visiting who asks, “So where do you usually hang out?”

These aren’t curated for algorithms or chasing clout. They’re the bars that make up New York. One week at a time.

🍻 Bar of the Week: Gebhard’s Beer Culture

📍 Location: 228 W 72nd St, Upper West Side
🚇 Nearest Subway: 72nd Street (1, 2, 3)

Vibe: A laid-back, craft beer-focused haven that feels equal parts divey and deliberate. Gebhard’s is where you go when you want a low-key night that still feels special, or when you’re trying to debrief a wild movie twist with friends.

🪑 Why We Love It

Gebhard’s has perfected the pub vibe. It’s dark wood and pinball machines, easy laughs and excellent pours. The bar sits just above Lincoln Center and barely below street level, making it a hidden gem in plain sight. A street-level alcove offers great people-watching, especially on a rainy day with a pint in hand.

What makes it stand out among Upper West Side bars is the balance between space and intimacy. It’s roomy enough to bring a whole crew post-movie, but cozy enough that you could come alone and melt into the atmosphere without missing a beat. And yes, if you just saw a thriller at the best theater in the city, AMC Lincoln Square, this is your post-credit discussion zone.

🍺 What to Order

The ever-rotating draft list is where the fun begins. Gebhard’s always has a stellar mix of local and national brews on tap, with bartenders who are more than happy to steer you toward something new. Like what you’re drinking? There’s a bottle shop in the back, so you can take a four-pack home.

🕹️ Something Extra

Pinball. Lots of it. Machines are tucked into both floors, adding to the relaxed, neighborhood-bar-meets-arcade vibe. It’s a perfect place to grab a drink, take a spin on the flippers, and let the night unfold.

🗽 Why It’s a TV and City Pick

Once you hit Central Park and start heading north, great bars get harder to come by, but Gebhard’s is a standout. It’s a no-pressure hangout with soul, a spot that makes the Upper West Side feel a little more fun. Underrated? For now. But not for long once this weekly column takes off!
