Patriot: Season 1 – Review

Patriot‘s full first season was released today, February 24th, only on Amazon Prime Video.

John Tavner wanders around in a stupor due to PTSD, having been stretched too thin in the world of undercover work by his well-meaning Head of Ops father. He’s seen so much bad stuff that it’s left him empty, with only his folk music as an outlet (containing very specific, confessional classified intel lyrics). John’s just sort of a reed in the wind. His wife, Alice (Kathleen Munroe), just hopes he’s okay and will eventually come home at some point (you know, for a day or two before he’s sent back out into the field).

The “hook” of Patriot, is that John’s new mission involves an N.O.C.(non-official cover) with an American piping firm. It’s a job that will allow him to travel overseas in order to sporadically tend to a bribery op that’s meant to thwart an Iranian election. So his undercover work begins on domestic soil, by faking his way into a job he’s not even close to being qualified for. For the most part though, Patriot is as closed off as its lead. Choosing non-traditional visuals and approaches at times, the camera will just pan in on his face while all noise drops out and a song plans. The filming tries to show just how damaged and detached he’s become.

Patriot is violent, and no matter how slapstick it is, this still stands in stark contrast to the overall tone. Whether it’s John casually pushing someone in front of a speeding truck or smashing a wooden palate over a guard’s head, Patriot lets these dark acts (including murder) done in the spur of the moment, for the good of the mission, slide on by as if they were as silly as the rest of goings-on.

In spite of some clever plot twists, overall I found the pacing too slow to hold my interest. The exaggerated, almost caricatured performances prevented me from emotionally investing in the characters.

I give Patriot a C.

    1. Did U miss the entire review , he says to skip it, which I should’ve done.
The story just plods and plods and plods, leading nowhere. no build to anything , nothing! Yeah , nice shots ! And? Characters acting and doing things that are way too quirky, nothing to do with plot, just take you out of it. Gets an ‘F’

  1. You fail as a reviewer. This show is shot so beautifully. The writing and art direction superb. The acting was fantastic and the filmmaking itself was none other. The shots were so well thought out and orchestrated. The storyline had no formula which I absolutely love. Go back to reviewing something you can understand … like “Three’s Company”.

    1. This reviewer missed the mark, and I very much disagree. The show is fantastic and un-traditional. I felt the characters, acting, and filming were all so tremendously and thoughtfully done for the impact they will leave on the viewer. Loved season one, was absolutely hooked, and cannot wait for season 2. I can understand a letter grade of A- or B+, but to give it a C just shows that this critic would only be happy seeing another standard show rolled off the production line with the same minor changes in plot here and there. This show breaks the mold and departs from the boredom of so many other new offerings that come out these days.

    2. Great reply m. benoit!
And… it warms myheart to see 7 people disregard the rather dim reviewer and only only one concurred with him…
So reactions of the people cán be intelligent! ÷).

    3. So well said.
I happened upon the show and was struck by how beguiling it is. Truly for me, it is one of the best series that I have come upon.

    4. Could not agree more. Great, great show. Loved everything about it. The acting, casting, locations, directing. Laughed so much watching. One of my favourite series for a while

  2. Finished it last night. It was brilliant. Very different from the usual tv shows (which is a good thing). Humourous. Dark. Thrilling. Cliffhanging. Had a feel of Coen brothers and Wes Anderson collaboration.

Never trust critics! Just look at the users IMDB scores and at over 9/10 you can’t go wrong.

  3. The reviewer who gave Patriot a C obviously did not get the joke. A brilliant show that is Fargoesque on steroids. Loved it totally, can’t wait for the second season.

    1. Agreed, John Le Carre meets the Coen Brothers.
One of the best things out there. Outstanding story. Outstanding dialog, fabulous ensemble acting.

  4. Season 2 addresses the negativity in the review.
One of the best shows I’ve engaged in. I’m sitting here feeling empty at how the John was feeling as the 2nd season came to an end. Emotional connection succeeded.
Give this show a chance, it’s unique and amazing.
