I had no idea how much I would love hearing Tiffany Haddish’s voice come out of an animated bird. That is exactly what Tuca & Bertie gave me, and I couldn’t be more thankful. Fans of Bojack Horseman will thoroughly enjoy Netflix’s next adult-animated comedy, Tuca & Bertie. In fact, it’s from the team that created Bojack, so you know it’s going to be absolutely hilarious.
Tiffany Haddish voices Tuca, a “no effs given” toucan alongside anxious best bird friend, Bertie, voiced by Ali Wong. The series also stars The Walking Dead’s Steven Yuen as Bertie’s boyfriend, Speckles–yes, another bird. In a similar fashion to Bojack Horseman, this animated series will have you literally rolling on the floor laughing with its puns, crude humor, and random tangents. The best part about it is Haddish as Tuca–hands down. There is something wonderful about seeing Haddish’s personality being reflected through animated toucan, it’s literally her in bird form.
Many critics have stated that Tuca & Bertie is a blend of Bojack Horseman and Broad City–and they would be 100% accurate. The comedic aspect of the animated series is its claim to fame, and even though it’s so random and weird, you can’t help but watch. Honestly, watching animated animals talk and behave as humans is one of the funniest things to watch. It’s actually quite genius if you ask me.
In a world that often focuses so much on the sad and depressing, Tuca & Bertie is a reminder to just let loose and have fun. It encapsulates the saying, “dance like nobody’s watching,” because it isn’t trying to be something shiny and bright. It’s just simple, hilarious humor, and I am so here for it. Haddish is the standout star of Tuca & Bertie and without her, the show simply doesn’t work. It’s her energy and charisma that brings Tuca to life, and it is Tuca’s ridiculous behavior that will have you laughing until your stomach hurts.
Get ready to laugh out loud with this adult animated series, and maybe don’t let your kids watch it.
I give Tuca & Bertie a B+.
