One Day is now streaming on Netflix.

One Day is the latest 14-episode series on Netflix, adapted from David Nicholls’ 2009 novel of the same name. Starring Ambika Mood and Leo Woodall, the show follows the lives of Emma and Dexter. Their story begins on Graduation night with a chance encounter and a shared pact to meet every July 15th for a day of adventure. As time passes, their lives take various twists and turns, but their friendship and love endure.
The series delves into the lives of Emma and Dexter, exploring their individual growth and the evolution of their friendship. Each episode focuses on a different July 15th event, showcasing the characters’ development both individually and as a pair.
You might recall the 2011 film adaptation led by Anne Hathaway, but expanding the story from a movie to a Netflix series allows for a deeper exploration of their relationship and personal growth. The episodes range from 18 to 36 minutes, with compelling performances by Mood and Woodall.
The contrast between Emma’s ambition and Dexter’s carefree nature is evident on screen. The series explores their careers, personal struggles, and the development of their friendship. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that they are meant to be together, leading to a satisfying payoff in the later episodes.
While the series effectively portrays the characters’ growth over the years, there is a lack of exploration into their lives beyond July 15th. Additional episodes would have strengthened the ending and provided more insight into their personal journeys.
Despite this, One Day is worth streaming for its emotional depth, phenomenal acting, and portrayal of the characters’ evolving relationship. While some aspects of the story may feel rushed, the series captures the essence of Nicholls’ novel and offers an engaging viewing experience.
I give One Day a B+.
