Modern Love: Season 1 – Review

Modern Love premieres October 18 on Amazon Prime Video.

By Elazar Abrahams

Based on the famous New York Times column of the same name, Modern Love is a half-hour series that tells a different love story each episode. Interestingly enough, most of the true tales aren’t as straight forward romances, which spices up the show.

Overall, the episodes are cute. I watched the first five out of eight and was entertained, although a bit bored because this genre is not my thing. The scripts are pretty cheesy, but knowing that they are unique real-life stories make the stiff and awkward dialogue more enjoyable. Modern Love definitely captures your attention. And if you don’t like one episode, the next will be totally different!

The main draw here is the stacked cast. Seriously, Amazon really hit the jackpot here! Actors in the show include Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Dev Patel, John Slattery, Brandon Victor Dixon, Catherine Keener, Julia Garner, Andy García, Cristin Milioti, Olivia Cooke, Andrew Scott, Shea Whigham, Gary Carr, and Sofia Boutella. Hathaway was disappointingly hammy in her episode as a bipolar woman. So far, Dev Patel’s performance as a dating app developer who missed his chance at true love is my favorite.

Modern Love could be the kind of show you throw on in the background while you’re cleaning the dishes. This anthology doesn’t require an investment. Check it out if it interests you.

I give Modern Love a B.
