Superman & Lois: “Pilot” – Review

Superman & Lois premieres February 23 on The CW.

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may finally have a superhero show worth ranting and raving about on The CW! Not to put down the ones that have been around for a while now, but the latest addition to the Arrowverse roster is one that I feel many fans are going to thoroughly enjoy.

Chronicling the lives of Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Bitsie Tulloch), Superman & Lois, tells the story of this Super family as they balance family life, work-life, and everything in between. In this version of the iconic story, we see Clark Kent and Lois Lane raising two teenage boys, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin), one of which is grappling with a social anxiety disorder.

I feel fans are really going to appreciate what Superman & Lois has to offer for a multitude of reasons, one of which being that it feels extremely relatable. Apart from the superhero-ness of it all, this story is about raising a family, being spread too thin, and still having to take on each day in stride. Whether you’re a superhero or not, that takes a toll on you, and I love that Superman & Lois gives us something very real and tangible within a world that is unlike ours.

With all the other Arrowverse shows, it is usually all about the fight, the hype, the villains, etc. However, Superman & Lois approaches things from a deeper perspective and I think that is where fans will feel reeled into what this show has to offer.

It’s a monumental feat to set yourself apart amidst all the shows of today, but I genuinely feel Superman & Lois is going to be something special. Whether it’s the focus on family, the reality of a superhero’s life, or just a platform to finally get Superman-exclusive storylines, this show is going to be a hit in more than one way.

Perhaps even better than the story itself is the cast bringing life to it. I’m in love with Hoechlin, Tulloch, Elsass, and Garfin’s chemistry as a family, and I think fans will love seeing their dynamic on screen. They do a superb job of portraying this new version of the Kent family, and I can’t wait to see more of it!

The only complaint I can imagine fans truly having is wondering where this show will fall compared to the other Arrowverse shows. Will there ever be a crossover considering Superman & Lois takes place at a later time than where the other shows are at now? I’m sure there are concrete plans in place, but given the nature of this particular series, I was a bit confused as to where it stands relative to the other shows. Time will tell, I suppose!

Until then, I hope you all enjoy the Superman & Lois pilot as much as I did!

I give the Superman & Lois pilot a B+.
