Beware the Slenderman premieres tonight, January 23, 10pm on HBO.
One of the most popular video games of 2014 was Slender. In the breakout horror game, you collected eight scattered notes while trying to avoid the Slenderman – a tall, faceless man wearing a suit. The plot was based on an internet urban legend, famous enough to inspire a stabbing of a young girl by two of her friends.
In the documentary Beware the Slenderman, HBO tries to capture all the spookiness of this story. But this the main flaw of the doc: it covers too much. Lots of time is spent on the court proceedings, but also origins of the Slenderman myth. The filmmakers also tried to explore mental health.
The best segments dive deep into the mythos of Slenderman and make the subject really interesting.
All around, HBO’s Beware the Slenderman is a thrilling documentation of the stabbing in 2014, but it tries too hard to cover a complicated story that can’t possibly be given justice in a mere two hours.
I give Beware the Slenderman a B-.
