The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special airs October 28th, 11:30pm on NBC.
Even after 40 years, Saturday Night Live is still finding ways to go viral. In last year’s Halloween episode hosted by Tom Hanks, the world was introduced to a character that the masses immediately – and quite inexplicably – loved. You can’t explain why David S. Pumpkins is funny, but you’ll find yourself laughing during the sketch anyway. The character is so popular that he’s the focus of a new animated Halloween special on NBC.
Hanks has said he was initially hesitant to perform the sketch. He even suggested to the writers they cut the sketch mere hours before the live show. It’s easy to understand why; the sketch is very strange and the character is a one-note joke. No one could have predicted David S. Pumpkins fever. His recognizable orange jack-o-lantern suit was a popular costume that October 31st.
In the half-hour special, viewers will see David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way. Peter Dinklage will narrate the story in rhyme.
While SNL has had a couple of successful spinoffs, Lorne Michaels has a history of stretching out jokes until they are no longer funny. Let’s hope David Pumpkins stays dependable.
