Want the R-rated romp of Cards Against Humanity but exclusively consisting of Jewish topics? Well, your Rosh Hashanah prayers have been answered. The Chosen One is a new card game that does exactly that. Both Yidden in the know and Hebrew school dropouts will find this game hilarious. Just make sure those under Bar Mitzvah aren’t present!
Each round, there is a topic card that players submit one of the cards in their hand to respond to it. Examples of topics range from “Why I’m going to hell” to “Every Jewish mother’s nightmare.” For an answer, you might throw down “automatic Shabbat elevators,” “losing your virginity in the mikvah,” or “shofar performance anxiety,” and hope your friends pick your card as the best match!
If the above paragraphs read like gibberish, here is an important disclaimer: The Chosen One is for members of the tribe only. Non-Jews will not find the cards funny, nor will they understand a large chunk of the uncannily specific jokes. That being said, the deck would make a great gift for your Jewish friends! Hanukkah is right around the corner after all.
All in all, I had a blast playing this with my friends on Shabbat afternoon. That’s definitely the ideal setting for the game. For the right crowd, I enthusiastically recommend The Chosen One. Reading some of the ridiculous card pairings aloud was the hardest I’ve laughed in a while.
